Advances in medical treatment and technologies utilized by ophthalmologists have resulted in substantial progress in terms of preventing and treating eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. While providing medical treatment and surgery to preserve and, where possible, restore a patient’s vision, many ophthalmologists report that patients may still experience functional difficulties due to their eye condition, and may benefit from a referral to Lighthouse International.
Patients may still encounter challenges in daily life, such as:
- Reading and writing even with glasses
- Identifying medications
- Moving around safely
- Getting or keeping a job
- Cooking safely
- Feelings of sadness and/or anxiety about their vision
The goal of our Physician Outreach program is to inform providers about Lighthouse International’s services that can help your patients manage daily living activities and remain safe and as independent as possible. These services complement the medical and surgical treatment of eye conditions and ongoing care provided by ophthalmologists. We have developed a model that incorporates in-person visits as well as specialized materials to help facilitate referrals.

In-person visits, in-services for health professionals, as well as informational mailings, have been integral to strengthening relationships with individual practitioners as well as large practices. The continuity and consistency in the program for years to come will prove vital in maintaining our relationships with physicians and their staff. Through outreach efforts and services, we make every effort to help you help your patients with vision loss.
