Suleiman Rifai, born in Tanzania, East Africa, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, an eye condition that slowly leads to blindness, at the age of 14. Suleiman moved to the United States in 1979, at the age of 18, and sought out Lighthouse International for rehabilitation and mobility training. He received his GED with the help of Lighthouse International before graduating from Adelphi University with a master’s degree in social work. Suleiman also developed a love for athletics. He has completed four New York City Marathons, two Boston Marathons, and was the first blind runner to compete in the Empire State Building Run Up.

“What inspired me to do this is the history I have with Lighthouse International. I have obtained the skills and tools to help rebuild my life through the Lighthouse. I’m going back to where I started. It’s a way to say 'thank you'.”
